ANIME VS. MANGA

For those of you who read the "Chuuka Ichiban!" and "Shin • Chuuka Ichiban!" manga, you probably noticed all the obvious differences between them. Comparing the two, not only the plot greatly differs, but character information as well. In my opinion, both the manga and the anime have their interesting points, but I have to say I like the anime a tad bit more, because it's more colourful, not to mention the exaggeration and lively cooking techniques! Besides, I'm much more ahead in the anime than in the manga. ^^; It's up to you to decide which one is better! Listed below are some differences between the CMB anime and manga, according to manga volumes (only up to volume 5 though):

Chuuka Ichiban!

Chapters 1-6 (Episodes 1-5):
Shouan in the manga

  • At the beginning, the folks at Kikkaro were expecting Shouan's arrival. According to a non-written rule in the cooking world, whenever the former chef of any restaurant resigns (or dies, in Kikkaro's case), the next chef is determined by a battle between the former chef's heir and a worthy competant. Mao was the one who suggested this battle two years after Pai's death...don't know the reason why though o.O;
  • Shouan is a "Super Chef", and looks completely different.
  • The way Pai died is explained in the manga. After Shouan obtained the Super Chef title, he left Pai. Worse yet, he took away all the good cooks at Kikkaro, and the annual salary the palace gave to Kikkaro that year! Pai was devastated, and died of exhaustion because she had to pay off all the debts.
  • Meili wasn't chasing a chicken when Mao first met her. Meili let her snake loose, and Mao was scared by it ^^ Then Meili led Mao to Yosen Shuuka. Mao didn't meet Sanche until after he got accepted as an apprentice in Yosen Shuuka.
  • Chouyu blew his nose on Mao's reference letter after reading it, instead of crumpling it up XD
  • Sanche's story was only told briefly...the manga did not state how strict his father was, we just know that he was strict ^^; Also, Sanche told his story on the roof of Yosen Shuuka...in other words, the whole "camp out" scene did not happen
  • There was no such thing as a "Green Peppers with Shredded Beef" shop like the one in Episode 5 ^^; Everything took place inside Yosen Shuuka.
  • Sanche left Mao a farewell letter in his room before heading back to Shanghai.

    Chapters 7-14:

  • Chapters 7-14 consists of an exciting two-part story, exclusive to the manga version! In the story, Mao declares a cooking match with Jean Bechereau, a conceited french chef who makes fun of Chinese cooking. The results of the match effected Yosen Shuuka greatly! Complete Synopsis is now up at here!

    Chapters 15-21 (Episodes 6-8):
    Some dude who got beaten by Aruu

  • When Karao and Aruu was first introduced, they were seen on the street performing an act. For only 10 cents, if one can get Aruu (who is quite heavy if you don't remember ^^;) out of this little circle, one gets 10 dollars! XD
  • On the other hand, Teitoku Ri accounced that it is time for Mao to return to Szechuan. After a night of consideration, Mao decided to stay in Guongzhou longer.
  • Lol this is funny...Aruu ran into Mao after beating up Chouyu! Of course Mao recongized him right away. Aruu's reply? "!@#$%^*!"
  • We find out that Karao and Aruu are from Wunam. In fact, Karao is a Super Chef too!

    Chapters 22-30 (Episodes 9-14):

  • The Super Chef competition format in the manga is different. It goes on for a few days instead of one. After the topic was announced, all the competants have four days to brainstorm and to collect ingredients needed.
  • Thank goodness, Meili didn't leave the rock behind!
  • Tan didn't give his thumb the "workout" ^^
  • Fei just picked his potatoes like we do in the grocery store ^^
  • Nothing about Fei's past was mentioned!!
  • Fei and Mao didn't change into their Super Chef outfit! XO

    Chapters 31-35 (Episodes 16-20):
    Royal Postal Team dude wolfing beef down

  • Meili did not join Mao on his short journey around China
  • Shirou ran into Mao in the middle of being chased by two guys because he had stolen food from them.
  • General Buu (Human Vacuum Cleaner) refused to try the food Shirou's mom made because she was Japanese, and was about to throw her in jail. But when he saw how pretty she was, he told her to "go in his room and sweat together". What a pervert!
  • Chapter 32 is another short story not in the anime. It talks about how Mao and Shirou rescued a man from the Royal Postal Team, who is responsible for stopping a war.
  • Anri wasn't as evil in the manga than in the anime, because she gave Mao the full credit of reviving the Okage dish. But she still seduced Mao in order for him to say yes ^^;
  • Gien has short hair
  • Iguru and Raia's story was completely different, and much more heartwarming! :D

    Shin • Chuuka Ichiban!

    Chapters 1-6 (Episodes 21-23):
    Chouyu's Super Chef Emblem revealed!

  • Ever wonder where Chouyu's Super Chef Emblem is, since the anime never mentions it? Well, when Mao reunites with Chouyu in the Tia episode, Chouyu wears a cloak with the emblem on it =)
  • During the siu mai battle with Shell, Mao did not get inspiration to make the big bang siu mai from the broken eggs, but just by looking at the many sui mai he made previously.
  • It turns out that the day after the battle with Shell is Meili's Birthday! Meili thought Map would be too cought up with Shell to remember...but thank goodness he didn't, just a little slow. So for the occasion, Mao made Meili buns shaped like peaches, that represent eternal life. How sweet (pun intended ^_~)!

    Chapters 7-15 (Episodes 24-29):
    Young Leon looking like Meili -_-;

  • It was not Meika's death anniversary when Meili and Chouyu got Lien's invitation. In other words, Chouyu carved the ice dragon just for fun and to showoff his l33t skillz :P
  • Shirou started to worry about Mao & Meili when a plate split in half by itself...a bad omen!
  • In the Chapter equivalent of episode 28, the Yosen Shuuka gang did not go on a fishing trip. Mao, Meili and Shirou secretly sneaked out to take a day off xD
  • They met Shell when Shirou almost hit him as skipping rocks ^^;...the bear thing in the anime is more fun though >_<
  • They had no lunch because Shirou left it at Yosen Shuuka -_-;
  • Leon's age is confirmed! Since Mao is 14 in the manga (after he became a Super Chef) and Leon is supposed to be 2 years older than him, that means Leon is 16 years old.
  • Speaking of Leon...in the manga Younger Leon looks like a fatter version of Meili instead of Mini-Mao...

    More coming right up!
